While the tires were being rotated (and getting a flat fixed) at the Les Schwab tire store in Galt (CA) in Sacramento County, I walked over to the Galt Flea Market, a Tuesday-Wednesday staple of the area. Some (such as the U.S. Attorney's Office) imply the Flea Market is a multi-cultural melting pot for counterfeit goods. Yes, there are many suspicious looking items to be found here (I almost purchased an orange and black "San Francisco Gints" jersey); still, I say this weekly gathering is quite the showcase for vegetables that will have you asking...what the heck it that?
And if your Spanish (or Vietnamese or Korean or Chinese or Hmong or...) is weak, you may never find out about many of these intriguing vegetable identities...other than hearing "One Dollah!"
I think what impressed me the most: it's early May and yet there are a lot of fresh vegetables available. Here in California, we have access to such a wide variety of fresh fruits and veggies for such a long period of time, we sometimes take it for granted. Yes, a lot of this is from Southern California. Yes, a lot of this is from south of the border. Still, we are blessed to live in a state with such a diverse population that we are regularly exposed to fresh, gastronomic treats from many different cultures.
So, feel free to apply names to some of these more intriguing delicacies. Maybe some recipes, too.
I'll start this name game (because I just had to ask, having never seen them on a plant):
