    I have a couple questions - I want to plant some sweet peas by seed - am I too late? Also I want to plant some poppy seeds as well - is it a good time? Thanks!

      "Set out plants" means stick 'em in the ground. Don't try starting a tomato plant from seed in June and expect fruit...but it depends where you live. And the variety of tomato.

    Transplant vegetable plants into the ground or in their permanent container. Don't try starting these plants from seed too late in their growing season. Typical growing season, that is. With climate change, all bets are off.

    Farmer Fred! You're back! Forgive me if I just couldn't find it, but I've been using your planting calendar from 2014 because I couldn't find more recent ones. Even so, it's been so helpful! I'm so delighted to have one for 2019, esp with this very wet spring. Thank you!! I have one question: could you perhaps add fennel to the list? I love growing it but I've had mixed success -- fab crops one year, pitiful ones the next, and I think it's my timing. Very grateful for your generosity in putting this together and sharing it.

    Hi Fred! Listen to your show on podcast. Love it!
    How very important is it to sift my compost? I've never done it... I have not always had stellar gardening success, but I wouldn't have thought that was the reason... Also, If I put down a Foot depth of wood chips 2 years ago (mostly to kill the grass... less mowing.)is it okay to plant in it now? Do I still have to dig down to the clay soil? I live in Elverta, CA

    If your compost is to the point you cannot identify any of the initial ingredients, and it resembles black or brown crumbly soil, there's no need to sift. Perhaps break up any remaining large chunks. I am sure that foot of mulch has been reduced quite a bit since you put it down two years ago. You do need, though, to move any of it aside enough to plant into the actual soil. Keep the mulch away from the tender new plants by a couple of inches.

    I couldn't find any where else to post this comment so I am posting it here. Last weekend, 6/23/19, you had a caller to your show who asked about Western Tanagers getting into his hummingbird feeders. I have had the exact same thing going on for the past 2 years. I live up in Somerset, El Dorado Count. I watch them land on the feeders and get the sugar water out. They scare the hummingbirds away. It may sound strange, but it's really happening. -Kathy
